The Ardiles Derby
When Semen Padang went toe to toe with Persipura yesterday in the Indonesia Soccer Championship the game was notable for one thing. The name Ardiles. No the former Tottenham, Argentina midfielder and occasional back up singer for Chas n Dave hasn't come out of retirement for the bright lights and pleasure of Padang or Jayapura.
Home team Semen Padang have a player called Hengky Ardiles. A true local lad made good, Ardiles was born and raised in West Sumatra and apart from a short spell with Persikabo has spent his career with Semen Padang and gone on to represent his country.
Osvaldo Ardiles Haay is a 17 year old who has been given his chance in the first team by Persipura this season after impressing in the Bhayangkara Cup. Despite his tender years he has been quick to impress in a misfiring Persipura side and no doubt he is a name we will be hearing much more about in the future though perhaps in the short term his appearances may be rationed as he is also studying at university!
Yesterday in Padang was the first tie Ardiles (Padang) had come up against Ardiles (Papua) on the pitch and while it was the elder who secured the points it was valuable experience for the youngster.
