Umanailo - A Star Is Born

Pusamania v Persiba 1-0 (Jefry Kurniawan) 2,541

This wasn't really a football match. Yes it was an East Kalimantan derby so we would expect fireworks. Unfortunately there were too many fireworks on the pitch for this to be an enjoyable game of football. The first half was crap, second half marginally better but when you consider the involvement of two icons of the game, Pnaryo Astaman on the field for Pusamania and Bima Sakti in the dug out for Persiba we expected better.

We are lucky there weren't more casualties other than the game of football. Pusamania's Aang Suparman got taken to hospital after being kicked in the header; the offender received a mere yellow for his actions while Aang is still in hospital with 11 stitches in his head.

Persiba are quickly earning a reputation for being tough opponents. In their first away game against Arema the home side had used all their subs by 46 minutes and Cristian Gonzales and Dedi Santoso face lengthy absences. Now this battle.

There is nothing wrong with being pysical and tough to play against but match officials need to take a stronger line with perennial offenders from the first minute. Brandish a red early doors and we may see a football match break out. Don't and we get a battle with resentments bubbling under for the whole game. Persiba felt the need to withdraw Ledi Utomo as he carried an early yellow card with him for most of the game making him less effective.

Maybe Persiba feel they need to impose themselves on other sides. Which is a shame because in Sohei Matsunaga they have one of the finest players of the season so far yet he seems an uncomfortable fit among the more physical elements of his team. Up front Persiba to all intents and purposes don't exist. Okta Maniani was anonymous again save for a last minute free kick the underworked Dian saved at the near post.

Pusamania probably deserved their first win of the season and the only goal of the game certainly deserved a better stage, sub Jefri Kurniawan showing a neat first touch in the box to drive home past the decent looking Alfonsius. But it was like a flower in a desert. A memorable goal in a forgettable game.

Persija v  Persela 2-1 (Jose Guerra, Ambrizal Umanailo; Herman Dzumafo) 40,260
Persija top of the table? How can this be? A second straight win and after the Battle of Segiri it was nice to see football win out though the wry smiles on the Persela bench after a penalty appeal was turned down suggest another story.
Persija played well and in Ambrizal Umanailo they seem to have unearthed a new star. He was quick, lively and skillful against Semen Padang last week and there was more of the same this time around, capped off with an assistant and a beautiful finish guaranteed to add stardust to any game.
Persela didn't come to make up the numbers. Coach Stefan Hansson knew his job was on the line and they had their moments with the experienced Herman Dzumafo a constant physical threat but Andritany continued his fine form with another stellar performance between the sticks. Good keepers make it look effortless and it must be reassuring for the defence to know behind them they have such a talented and intelligent keeper, confident in his area and brave enough to get stuck in when needed.
All this and Ramdhani Lestalahu came on for a cameo after injury. Is this Persija side built to last? The Jakmania have seen many false dawns and they will be cautious but they will have thrilled at tonight's performance and savour being top of the table albeit for 24 hours only.
A good game and good news from Mexico with FIFA lifting its suspension of the PSSI!

Leandro Lives Another Day As PSM Defeat Persela

PSM v Persela 2-1 (Rizky Pellu, Alex De Souza; Herman Dzumafo) 9,882

Going into this game the headlines were all about the future of PSM coach Luciano Leandro. Three points and how quickly football can change. Now it is Persela coach Stefan Hansson under the spotlight as Persela fell to their second defeat of the season.

Post match Leandro praised his players patience saying Persela had come to defend and had been very difficult to break down before man of the match Rizky broke the deadlock. However after the game club management said they were continuing to evaluate the team

Pusamania Borneo v Persib 0-0 2,760
Two games, two points if the report card for both sides after this 0-0 draw in East Kalimantan. Going into the game the question being asked in Bobotoh land was would Kim Jeffrey Kurniawan be in the starting line up after being singled by out by Persib fans after their 1-1 draw with Sriwijaya. We, start he did and the world didn't end.
Now will Dejan Antonic be under the microscope? Two points from two games isn't what the demanding Persib support want and it doesn't matter the quality of the opponent. Persib are a side in transition and teams aren't built overnight but that doesn't concern the supporters too much. They want a team built before they go to bed so they can dream of more glory.
Yet look at their team and it is hard to see them struggle for too long. In the cold light of day it doesn't look the best of starts but come the end of the season Persib may look back on this as a point earned. Not many teams will come to Samarinda and pick up a point as Antonic said after the match. 'Every team that comes here finds it difficult to steal a point because Borneo are a good team and have a new coach.'

After the game Pusamania Borneo coach Dragan Djukanovic took his frustrations to social media saying 'I'm in football for 30 years, but I never met such a robbery. Real score should be 2-3 goals different for Pusamania against champion Persib but this is Indonesia???' His reaction was no doubt in part after claims for a penalty were turned down by the ref which was a bit of a surprise!

Why such a small crowd for such a high profile game? Pusamania's media officer told me it was a long weekend which affected the attendance.

Gresik United v Perseru 1-1 (OG; Gakou Amadou) 10,100

I had a poor feed so wasn't able to watch all the game but Perseru surprisingly took the lead before an OG saved a point for the home side. The highlight for me was when a Perseru player went down like he had been shot in a bid to waste time, some players don't seem to be aware of injury time but there you go, and on rushed the stretcher bearers.

In their haste to get him off the field they bundled the player on, lifted the stretcher and the player promptly fell off. TV cameras and Indonesia then saw the wonderful sight of a Perseru official swing a punch at one of the hapless medics. Oh joy...Indonesian football is back!

Persib v Sriwijaya 1-1 (Tantan; Alberto Goncalves) 25,125

Indonesia Super League champions and winners of the President Cup Persib left it late to earn a point from the opening game of the ISC campaign. Tantan, on as a second half replacement for Argentine import Robertinho saved Persib's blushes in injury time but judging by Twitter the Bobotoh were in no mood to rejoice.

Sriwijaya had done their homework. Despite going into the game with a youngster between the sticks, well, early 20s, they stuffed their outfield with former Persib players and it was the visitors who took the lead in injury time of the first half with ex Persipura, Arema striker Goncalves finding the net.

Last season I felt that Sriwijaya had recruited well but we never got a chance to see them at their best before the campaign was halted. This year, adopting the policy if it worked for Persib then why not us the two time ISL champions raided the West Java club for players. Not a bad start eh? And not a bad return journey for the 100 or so Sriwijaya fans who travelled overland from Palembang...about 750 kilometres with a sea crossing thrown in!

After the game Persib coach Dejan Antonic admitted the team had not played too well saying it was important the team did not lose but several of his players underperformed and he was pleased with their showing in the last 25 minutes.

Persib: I Made Wirawan; Purwaka Yudhi, Yanto Basna, Tony Sucipto, Vladimir Vujovic, Atep (David 59'), Hariono, Kim Jeffrey Kurniawan, Robertino Pugliara (Tantan 62'), Juan Belencoso, Samsul Arif (Febri 76').

Subs: Yogi Triana; Eka Ramdani, Ichsan Kurniawan, Zalnando, Airlangga Sucipto, TA Mushafry, Yohannis Nabar.

Barito Putera v Bhayangkara Surabaya United 1-2 (Ibrahim Conteh; Otavio Dutra, Rudi Widodo) 8,178

It was the home team that took the lead through Conteh but the new look Surabaya United, their first game since they merged with PS Polri fought back and earned three points thanks to a second half winner from the experienced Widodo with just six minutes on the clock.

The Cops had Shane Malcolm in their starting line up after signing the Jamaican born Guam international pre season. He had previously played for Stirling Lions in Western Australia.

Barito coach Mundari Karya rued the first half penalty awarded to BS United by  the ref saying the official was too far from the action to have seen the incident clearly. 'I still respect the decision,' he said, 'even though it changed the players attitude.'

Barito Putera: Aditya Harlan; Hansamu Yama, Mamdou El Hadji, Aswar Syamsuddin, Fathul Rahman, Lucky Wahyu ( Amirul Mukminin 69'), Adam Alis, Ibrahim Conteh, Ichsan Pratama (Paolo Sitanggang 46'), Dedi Hartono, Junior (Yongki Ariwibowo 71').
Subs: Imam A Fadillah; M Khusen, Amirul Mukminin, Paolo Sitanggang, Jefry Haay, Yongki Ariwibowo, Agi Pratama.
