Persijap & The Thai Connection

Not many Thai players have appeared in Indonesia. At one stage, Persijap boasted three of them! Phaitoon Thiabma, who plays down the right flank, was with the club from 2006 until 2010 after appearing for his country a few times when former English striker Peter Withe was the coach.

Phaitoon was the first of the Thais to score as best as I can make out, equalising on 42 minutes after Persija's Oritisan Solossa had given the Kemayoran Tigers the lead. The game ended 2-2.

Since leaving Persjap Phaitoon has certainly done the rounds in Thailand, playing for Osotspa (three times!), Muang Thong United, PTT and now Nakorn Pathom United.

Coincidentally, when Withe returned to Thailand at the helm of Premier League side Rayong PTT, one of his first signings was Phaitoon!

Another of the Thai trinity who called Jepara home at that time was Sukda Joemdee but despite being called up by the Thai national team at various levels it is difficult to find much information about him but perhaps that is because he moved to Vietnam, where he had played previously, and took Vietnamese citizenship. He is now known as Doan Van Sakda and last year played for Osotspa Samut Prakan; coincidentally with Phaitoon! I wondered if they recalled their Jepara adventures in the dressing room?

Manit Noywech made up the threesome. Another former international, the striker was nicknamed Rivaldo in his home country and after a season in Indonesia returned to his homeland with Suphanburi and doesn't seem to have made much of an impact in subsequent years.

That 2006 wasn't really an astounding success for Persijap with their three Thai Amigos as they finished mid table in the Western Conference of the Liga Indonesia with 33 points from their 26 games.

You can’t help but wonder. Phaitoon, Sukda and Manit all arrived in Jepara in 2006. In 2007, a restaurant opened offering spectacular beach views, sunsets and Thai food!
