Safuwan Nicks It For LionsXII

It was a night of unbridled passion, a cup tie in the fullest sense of the word when a defeat means the end of a dream for another season.

LionsXII had to beat group leaders Perak to even have a chance of reaching the knock out stage of the Malaysia Cup and going into the game they were handicapped with the absence of leading scorer Shahril Ishak.

They won, eventually, with a bit of luck and with some key players putting in a lion's performance to replace their absent chums.

But had Perak scored, and they did when the LionsXII spilled a free kick, then things may have taken on a different complexion. But the ref saw nothing, nor apparently did the linesman and Lions could, eventually, luxuriate in a hard fought victory.

I'd not seen Hariss Harun for a while but the boy has definitely become a man. He has filled out where he needed to and added the necessary strength to his intelligence. And quite appropriate he should have scored LionsXII opening goal with a towering header after good work down the flank by someone in a red shirt.

Perak hit back almost immediately setting up a nervy last 25 minutes for the home team and their fans.

Fazrul Nawaz had plown a lone furrow for much of the game up top for the home team and when he was replaced by Khairu Nizam there was another opportunity for e to check out the progress a gangly youth has made over the last couple of years.

Nine minutes to go and Safuwan Baharudin, the central defender, tore into the Perak box. The ball was bobbling awkwardly but he heldo on and with the keeper committed executed a perfect lob that sent the home crowd into a frenzy.

LionsXII now have four points from their opening four games with this their first win.Sarawak and Perak share top spot with seven points and Lions have a negative goal difference. Next up they host Sarawak who thumped Kedah 4-0.

A win for Lions then would make things very interesting indeed
