Thai FA Leadership Crisis

The Sports Authority of Thailand (SAT) has warned it will intervene if the Football Association of Thailand (FAT) does not conduct its election for a new president immediately.

The controversy did not end there. Worawi, whose second term ended in December, refused to get agreement on the postponement via a resolution from the general meeting, even after being recommended to do so by the SAT official present to oversee the election. The FA's caretaker president Worawi Makudi controversially called off the FAT general meeting on Friday, citing a problem involving representatives present carrying duplicated authorisation letters from member clubs.

SAT governor Kanokphand Chulakasem said the decision to postpone the general body meeting of any sport association should be taken by the members and not by the executive board.

"Whether the election should go ahead or not requires consent from the general body. It is clearly unlawful for someone to decide to call it off without a proper reason.

"We have already informed [the FAT] verbally and will now draught a formal letter asking them to conduct the meeting according to the rules and regulations. Should they refuse to comply with the rules, we have the power to stage the election - just as we have done in previous cases."

Regarding Worawi's claim that he was not able to reschedule the FA meeting due to his commitments as a Fifa executive board member, Kanokphand said the meeting should be held once he had finished his international duties.

"No matter how important his Fifa or AFC [Asian Football Confederation] duty is, I think it should not take more than three weeks to stage the meeting. The most important thing is that justice should be upheld," said Kanokphand.
