D Day In SLeague

Today sees the destiny of the SLeague decided with three teams going into tonight's games thinking they can still clinch the title after four years of SAFFC domination.

Etoile will be undoubted favourites. They have a one point lead over second place Tampines and a three point lead over third place Home United. The Frenchies play Albirex Niigata away knowing a win will ensure they become the first foreign team to win the SLeague.

Second place Tampines Rovers have the best goal difference of the contenders and face Balestier Khalsa at home. Balestier have managed just 25 goals all season while the rampant Stags have netted 64 averaging exactly two a game.

Fans with long memories will recall however how Balestier Khalsa managed to win at both Tampines and Home United a couple of seasons back, effectively spoiling their chances then of winning the title so will go into tonight's game as proud party poopers.

Home United don't stand an earthly. Well, they do. They can hope both Etoile and Tampines lose and they must win by a margin of at least six goals. Then, they will be crowned champions. Trouble is they are playing SAFFC and you can be sure Richard Bok will be most reluctant to see his team lose by any margin thus gifting the title to the Uniform rivals.

Shahril Ishak's move to Indonesia where he joined Persib has been a big loss for Home United and questions must be asked about the wisdom of allowing him to move with just a handful of games left in the title run in.

Tampines allowed Khairul Amri to head south as well but his loss has not been as sharply felt as they have goals coming from the evergreen Duric as well as Shaffein.

As a neutral of course I have no preference who will win the league. At the start of the season I tipped Home United but as we get down to the final stretch I am hoping Etoile slip up. Not because I'm English but because it don't seem right, a foreign team winning the domestic championship.

Given the controversy this season over attendance figures it will be interesting to see how many tickets are sold for all three games. It has been an exciting season and the clubs deserve to have the stadiums filled tonight by paying spectators.

But Manchester United are playing Manchester City...
