An ex International's Opinion

Everyone has an opinion about football and sometimes they are even different which is nice. Wouldn't the world be a dull old place if every sad sap thought Manchester United were the biggest club in the world and the English Premier League was the best league in the world.

Now we have a former Indonesian international being wheeled out to give his thoughts over Indonesia's 7-1 humiliation by Uruguay.

Sarman Panggabean suggests that the Indonesian FA made a monumental cock up in inviting Uruguay to play a friendly. He suggested it would have been better to have played an ASEAN rival ahead of the ASEAN Cup in December.

To which I say bollocks.

Indonesia are in free fall for many reasons, some football, many non football. Over the years they have played friendlies against the likes of Pelita Jaya Under 21, the Army and the Navy. No disrespect to them but that is an insult for a national team expected to perform on the highest stage.

Games against the better teams in the world are the norm in places like Thailand and it is only by playing the better teams that Indonesian coaches and managers can perhaps see how stagnant and 19th century their thinking is.

Comments:
