Malaysia bring back the foreigners?

PETALING JAYA: The domestic league may see the return of foreign players next season. Though a formal decision is yet to be made, this speculation has been rife since the FA of Malaysia announced their new sub-committees on Aug 23.

Local competitions committee head Datuk Hamidin Mohd Amin is focused on bringing back the fans to the stadiums. While some venues still pack in their supporters, most have lost out.

Malaysian clubs have also suffered on the international scene — such as in the AFC Cup. Selangor, though Super League and FA Cup champions, suffered heavy defeats to Indonesia's Sriwijaya and Vietnam's Binh Doung. Hamidin played it very close to his chest but his body language suggested they were open to bringing back foreign players.

This has prompted several teams to look for foreign players for the new season. Heavyweights — Selangor and Kelantan — have taken different approaches regarding foreign players. Selangor head coach, K. Devan, will wait for official word before making his move.

“We will scout for foreign players when we get the nod from our FA. Some teams have already started looking. But I don’t mind starting a bit later,” said Devan.

“It is not a big problem as long as you know your system and team. Then, you’ll know what type of players to get.

"Hiring foreign player needs comprehensive planning. Many aspects need to be looked into before a decision is made."

Kelantan head coach B. Satianathan prefers to plan ahead.

"I'm already in touch with several players from South America, Africa and some from Asia," said Satianathan.

“We're looking for a central defender, midfielder and striker. It will all also depend on our budget and the quota of foreign players."

Kelantan have already offered contract extensions to their current players for next season.
