Alfie's First 6 Months

I love this. You know like when you were a kid and each time you started a new exercise book? You'd take great care to write your name as neatly as possible on the cover. That first, virginal, page, you would use your bestest writing. This time, you'd promise yourself, you really would keep it neat on every single page. It would be a book you would be proud to show your teacher and parents.

Of course by page 2 you would have fallen into your usual regieme. Your writing would get worse, your doodles get bigger andby page four it would be as doggeared as the rest of the tatty museum pieces that filled the bottom of your adidas sports bag amid the debris of your mum's cheese and cucumber sarnies and orange juice that had leaked from the Tupperware cup.

Something similar happens in Indonesia whenever a calender is drawn up for the national team to keep them busy and in action. A programme is released and people dutifully regurgitate it hoping that this year, finally, much of what is planned will actually take place.

Alfred Riedl is now the man charged with bringing glory to the Indonesian national team and as ever the FA are giving him every opportunity to get his team prepared. And they will need it with World Cup qualifiers in October as well as the AFF Cup in December.

With the ISL season ending at the end of the month and Riedle not having been here long enough to see many games a couple of sessions will be held where he will be able to run the rule over the players.

A month long training camp will then begin in August, with time off for Leberan, before the World Cup qualifiers take place in October followed by the hosting of the Independence Cup in the same month.

Three friendlies are pencilled in for November, I'm not sure whether this is real games or the usual stuff like Pelita Jaya Under 23s and the Army, before the AFF Cup begins in December.

No mention of when the Indonesia Super League will start. No mention of whether clubs will be happy at the thought of signing expensive internationals only to see them being unable to play.

These long training camps are of questionable value. Under Benny Dollo and Ivan Kolev the players had plenty of get togethers but it never translated into anything on the field beyond a desire to pump the ball 50 yards and hope Bambang Pamungkas would win the first ball, then the second then get a shot off.

Comments:
1) Apparently they're having two mini-camps in June, one in Makassar and the other in Jakarta, 23 players each. Plus, Iman Arief said they would likely keep up to 80 percent of the previous senior team.

2) I heard September 5 for a Super League start date, though that's always subject to change. If you believe Nugraha Besoes, PT Liga Indonesia was in on the discussions on having a long training camp. Whether it had any actual input is another matter....

nicely said, me.

players selection is also my main concern (blah). how the hell he will choose his players if he never watch the match himself?

but, i guess he has all answer. he will hold selection and call 23 players from each eastern and western indonesia. how will he pick 46 names out of thousands players? he knows.

btn schedules three friendlies, and since it's up to federation to arrange the friendlies, then i will put my bet on your list. maybe, they should put urakan fc on the list. urakan is regular sparring partner for both persija and persitara.

previously, i had high hopes alfie will give an opportunity to youngsters. but, my optimism ran out quickly. btn chief said they're likely to keep about 80 percent from previous squad. so, i guess i have to see bambang and ismed running cluelessly on the pitch longer than i thought

plus ca change
