Singapore's loss...

It was only going to be a matter of time before Gabriel Obatola found a new club once the Singapore government had rejected an extension to his permission to carry on playing in the SLeague.

The 22 year old Nigerian had been harbouring hopes of becomng a Singaporean citizen. This would have been his fifth year in the country and the man who had been Gombak United's top scorer for the last three years had turned down a move to Maccabi Haiffa to pursue the dream.

But it is not to be. Instead of becoming a Lion he will be a lumberjack after signing for Portland Timbers in the USA. Next season, 2011, they will join an expanded MLS and with Obatola signing a two year contract he hopes to be coming up against the likes of David Beckham then.

His team mate Kingsley Njoku was also rejected an extension recently in Singapore after well publicised personal matters.
