Some bad news...
Indonesia's World Cup bid may be dead in the water. With government support lacking there is next to no chance of Indonesia's bid being accepted by FIFA who require FAs to show government support for all applications.
But support here has been lukewarm at best with the governemnt thought to prefer prioritising a strong league and regional presence.
Over the last few years Indonesia has failed to qualify for the 2011 Asian Cup, failed at the 2010 SEA Games and not got past the semi finals of the 2008 ASEAN Cup. Meanwhile at club level Sriwijaya, PSMS Medan, Persik Kediri and Arema Malang have failed to get past the group stages of either the AFC Champions League or the AFC Cup.
There has been much soul searching and debate in recent years over Indonesia's failure to make an impact regionally. The country has the largest poplulation in ASEAN yet it has slipped behind the likes of Singapore, with a population smaller than Jakarta at Leberan, Thailand and Vietnam with Malaysia now also making waves after years in the doldrums.
The only silver lining comes in the team currently in Uruguay who played with a verve not seen here for a long time during the 2009 Under 19s last year while a vibrant pulls in fans and TV viewers despite the bad media the game attracts.
