SAFFC v Sriwijaya (AFC Champions League Play Off)
For the second year running SAFFC must earn Champions League football after overcoming Indonesian opposition. But whereas 2009 saw them overcoming a struggling PSMS, who ultimately were relegate, 2010 sees them up against Sriwijaya Palembang.
The one off game will take place in Singapore, probably at Jalan Besar Stadium, on 30 January.
With the SLeague not due to begin until a few days later SAFFC will go into the game fresh. But untried.
Next year's Warriors will have an unfamiliar look about them as they enter a new era without Aleksander Duric and Therdsak Chaiman among others. Coach Richard Bok again has plugged the gaps with experience snapping up Indra Sahdan Daud and Noh Rahman.
Sriwijaya on the other hand will go into the game on the back of two home games against Persik (23/01/10) and Persebaya (26/01/10). Games that will see them half way through, exactly, the ISL season.
Coach Rahmad Darmawan is into his 3rd season with the club that began life in Jakarta known as Persijatim before moving to Solo and finally ending up in Palembang just a few years back.
His first campaign saw the team known as Laskar Wong Kito, Our People's Army, win an unprecendated domestic double meaning they could enter the Champions League 2009.
ast season saw Persipura power to the ISL title but Sriwijaya won the opa Indonesia for the second successive season hence this play off opportunity.
The side is brimming with experience and internationals.
In goal there is current Indonesian first choice Ferry Rotinsulu while former international Hendro Kartiko provides heaps of experience on the bench.
At the back there is the national team captain Charis Yulianto who lines up along side the experienced Christian Woraboy, Isnan Ali, Amrizal and Singaporean international Precious Emuejeraye.
The midfield is also packed with internationals including the Liberian Zah Rahan who became the first foreigner to win the Player of the Year award. He is joined by Ponaryo Astaman, Arif Suryono, SEA Games captain Toni Sucipto, Bobby Satria, Oktavianus and Anoure Obiora.
Up front Keith Kayamba Gumbs netted a hat trick at the weekend while Rachmat Rivai has come in and been a useful partner in a classic big man, little man partnership while Mostapha Aji provides useful support as does the Nigerian Obiora.
All in all it promises to be a fascinating match up featuring two of the most successful coaches in south east Asian football.
