Darby told to listen to the media
Steve Darby, the Thai SEA Games coach and assistant to national team manager Bryan Robson, has been told to listen to the media in future.
As the soul searching and chest thumping continues in Thailand over their team's failure to reach the SEA Games semi finals for the first time since 1873 Darby has come under fire as have the Thai FA for lack of preparation.
In today's Bangkok Post the media are looking for a greater role in the running of the neational team.
If Darby continues to work in Thailand, he should listen to the media instead of thinking that they just try to criticise him
Which is of course absolutely spot on. In fact from now on all national team coaches should just stay home and allow the press to pick the teams for them. Because the media know so much more about the game and the players.
Of course if the team selected by the media then loses well, that is also the coach's fault and he should be sacked.
The Thais of course have a divine right to be in every SEA Games semi or final because they always have so they always should.
Far be it for me, a humble blogger with way too much free time, to disagree with the august Bangkok Post. But might I respectfully point out that in fact the media get off their fat comfortable arses and find out what is happening in other countries in the region in youth development.
The Malaysians, as I have said ad infinutum, have been doing good stuff for a couple of years now. Singapore have their youngsters playing in the SLeague on a regular basis. Indonesia has sent a team to Uruguay to play in a league there and they have set up an Under 21 league to allow the best players a chance to mix it with their own.
And the Thais have done what?
The Thais have some of the most exciting talent in the region and they have not become a poor side overnight, despite the self righteous media reaction. But they were in a group with Malaysia and Vietnam which was never gonna be easy and, well, you know. In football, shit happens.

I think certain sections of Thai society resent having a farang in a specialised position such as a football manager because it reminds them that they have nobody good enough to do it amongst themselves yet. I think this response is a coded way of pouncing on Steve's failure and saying "We know better than you". All nonsense, of course.
it's because they lost, plain and simple, and they lack the balls to come out and attack the fat
i was at a press conference one time up there and the medias sucking up to wm was thai crawling at its worst/best
he walked in the room and they applauded. he talked abt his trip to europe they applauded

but in singapore, like malaysia, thailand and indonesia the media are shit acared to come out and say that the malaise is at the very top.
