Busy time for Vietnamese

HA NOI — Viet Nam’s U-19 national football squad will replace Iran’s U-21 team to compete in the International U-21 Football Tournament from October 9-18, the event’s organising board has announced.

According to the official announcement of the Iran Football Federation, the Iranians are too busy competing in their ongoing National Football Championship so are unavailable to take in part in the International U-21 Football Tournament as planned.

The U-19 team under the guidance of coach Trieu Quang Ha left for Laos yesterday to play in the pre-SEA Games in Laos from October 2-6 against counterparts from Thailand, Malaysia and hosts Laos before returning Viet Nam to take part in the U-21 event.

The event will give the squad ample practice to prepare for the qualifying round of the U-19 Asian Football Championship 2010.

Ha said, "We don’t think we’ll win the U-21 event, however, our team will do our best."

"I think that these events are very useful for my players in terms of preparations for the Asian U-19 championship. They’ll benefit, with improved physical strength, experience, and tactics in every game. This will be the best preparation we could get for qualifying for the Asian event," Ha added.

The tournament, which is recognised by the Asian Football Confederation as an official regional international championship for younger players, will still feature six teams with China, Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia and Viet Nam’s U-19 team and U-21 team all competing in a round robin competition in two groups.

The winner will receive a bonus of US$7,000. The runners-up will take $5,000 and $3,000, respectively.

The event’s best scorer, best player, best goal keeper will also receive prize money.

The tournament will take place in the southern city of Binh Duong after the national championship finished on Sunday.

This is the third time the country has organised an international tournament for youth players.
