Tampines Rovers v Kedah?

THE GOOD old days of the Lions taking on their neighbours across the Causeway in the Malaysia Cup may never be relived, but there are plans in the pipeline to revive the rivalry on a regular basis.

The Young Lions were invited to take part in the Malaysian FA Cup in 2006, where they qualified for the semi-finals.

There's also the annual Sultan of Selangor Cup in October when reigning Malaysian champions Selangor will take on a Singapore Selection side.

If that is not enough, there are ongoing talks between the Football Association of Singapore (FAS) and the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) to create a league involving top teams from the S-League and the M-League.

'There have been talks between the FAS and the FAM to create a new league featuring the top clubs in Malaysia and Singapore,' Dato' Azzuddin Ahmad, general secretary of the FAM, told The New Paper.

'The idea was proposed by the FAM. So far, we've had two meetings and nothing is finalised yet, but it was well received by the president of FAS (Zainudin Nordin).'

The New Paper understands that the proposed league is not a season-long league and will comprise the top teams from the S-League and the M-League.

It is likely to take place in between breaks of the two leagues or in the off-season.

When asked about this, Winston Lee, general secretary of the FAS, said: 'We're in talks with our FAM counterparts to look at ways to have more matches for the national team and the clubs.'

Even if the proposed league between S-League and M-League teams does not materialise, Singapore fans can look forward to the creation of the Asean Super League.
The initial idea is for two Singapore-based clubs to form part of a regional 16-team competition.
