Gonzales for Indonesia?
He has been the most prolific goalscorer in Indonesian football for the last five years. Now the barrel chested Uruguayan striker Christian Gonzales is applying for citizenship which could see him called up for the national team at the 2010 AFF Cup in December.
Whether it's PSM, Persik or Persib Gonzales has consistently been at the upper reaches of the goalscoring charts, missing out on top spot last season by one goal after a poor first half of the season.
Will he add anything to the national team? He's 35 years old, has good upper body strength, the pace of a fully laden oil tanker and the predatory instincts of a fox. With other players being lined up for speeded up naturalisation Indonesia could well go into the AFF Cup with a forward line that has never played together and three or four other players who have never even played in the country.
It's a step into the unknown for both sides but will it be a happy one for all concerned? I have my doubts...
