Comments:
Tony - or anyone else who may know.

I have a question that I cant find an answer to on either the S-League site or the AFC site.

As I understand it, the winner of the Singapore Cup becomes one of (maybe the only) Singapores representatives in the next years AFC Cup.

I know that none of the overseas teams has ever won the Singapore Cup - but what would happen if one did?
I can't really imagine that team would be put into the AFC Cup to represent Singapore. Or would they? Or is there some agreement that says if an overseas team makes the final, Singapore's representative will be the highest placed Singapore-based team? Or something else?

Reason I ask is that on the 442 forum here, some people are getting quite excited about the idea that South Melbourne might win the Cup. They are then assuming that the team would go into the 2011 AFC Cup.

Any advice on what would really happen would be very appreciated.

Thanks,
Bruce

hi bruce

if smh were to win the singapore cup then no, they wouldn t be allowed to enter the afc cup. it would go i imagine to the best placed singapore side

Thanks Tony.
Thats pretty much what I thought. I just can't see how a "foreign" team would be allowed by the AFC to represent Singapore! Or Singapore for that matter - it would be pretty counter-productive for Singapore football, I would imagine.

Someone on the Forum has already asked if South Melbourne will get any home games - meaning get to play any of their Singapore Cup games in Melbourne!. I've already managed to answer that one.

As an old NSL supporter, you would be across the PR doldrums that clubs like South Melbourne have slipped into in recent years. This move to play in the Singapore Cup has generated significant interest and positive comment (for South Melbourne and also the "older" clubs in general) here. I hope it continues - whether or not it raises the profile of "Singapore" football in this country remains to be seen - but I hope it does. Australians need, in my opinion, to immerse themselves far more in the football world that exists in Asia than they do now.

I realise that in itself is another huge topic, so will leave off there. And again, my thanks for your advice.
