SAFFC v Muang Thong United 0-0 (4-3 on pens)

As Andy Gray would say, what a game.

I don't really do match reports, even more so for this game as I was pitch side what a great advertisment it was for south east Asian football.

Muang Thong United played very well. In goal Kawin Thamsatchanan showed again what a tremendous keeper he is with a quality, confident performance. Whereas Manuel Almunia looks like he should selling the Big Issue at Bond Street tube station, Kawin commanded his area. He was gobby, he was in control. He clattered Johnny Wilkinson then stood up and continued bawling his defenders. One finger tip save was superb.

At the back both Panupong and Nataporn ended with bandages making them look like they were auditioning for a Mummy remake. Nataporn especially looked calm and showed good touch on the ball. Contrast his performance with Sriwijaya's Charis Yulianto. Two national team captains but that's about all they have in common.

Yaya was excellent, so was striker Christian Yao Kouakou who put himself about and always threatened. And of course Teerathep Winothai who I have raved about before.

SAF weren't without their heroes. In goal Shahril Jantan turned in a wonderful performance on a par with Kawin's if not better. The new signings looked good for Richard Bok's team. Niklas Sandberg, Ivan Lovric was a rock at the back and if Akiyoshi Taisuke can produce a better final ball we may not have needed penalties.

But hey, Liverpool were playing Everton. Who cares lah!

Comments:
