Singapore v Thailand
Singapore v Thailand 1-3 (Mustafic Fahruddin; Sutee Suksomkit 2, Therdsak Chaiman) 22,183
First 20 minutes the Thais showed why they are best side in ASEAN as their slick passing and intelligent moving tore the Singapore rearguard to shreds.
Prompted by the impressive Datsakorn Thonglao at the heart of the midfield the Thais spread the play and often had the Singaporeans chasing shadows. Up to Pipat Thongkaya, in for Teerathep Winothai, 'ran himself into the ground' said assistant coach Steve Darby and it took a finger tip save from Hassan Sunny to stop the Persisam striker giving the visitors the lead.
It wasn't till the half hour mark that Singapore threatened Sinthaweechai in the Thai goal and that they did so twice in a matter of minutes showed not only their threat but also illustrated how well the Thais had kept them pressed back.
Second half Singapore showed a lot more purpose going forward and at times had the Thais pressed back in their own half, indeed they should have had penalties of their own but the ref mysteriously waved play on.
And there in lies both the beauty and beast of football. Forget talk of formations and the man in the hole. So much in football comes down to judgement calls made in the flash of a second. Had the ref given a pen, had the Singaporeans made it 1-1 who knows what would have happened. If...the biggest word in football.
But they didn't. Singapore, with substitute Khairul Amri impressive, had to press forward and if there's one thing a side that excels in passing and moving loves it's counter attacking.
It is perhaps ironic that the Thai goals came from SLeague icons. Sutee Suksomkit scored twice and celebrated each time by taking a flying kick at the corner flag...a bit unfortunate on the post if you ask me but then no one is. Sub Therdsak Chaiman came on and netted as well.
But at the heart of this Thai victory was not Bryan Robson, Sutee or the king. It was Teerasil Dangda. That he didn't lead the line was a compliment to the Singapore defenders. That he dropped deep, that he moved wide, that he operated wherever he saw fit was a compliment to his intelligence and ability.
Second leg on Wednesday and victory for Singapore would see them leapfrog the Thais into second. I'm really looking forward to it, make no mistake this was a wonderful game of football especially second half as the Singaporeans got more involved, but I can't make it. I have a day job...

They do get stuck in that's for sure. It was a good game to watch, like you I don't know if I'll make the next one, got to make a living somehow!
If the ref had done his job properly, then Singapore would have only had 8 men on then pitch at the end of the game. Noh Alam Shah, Noh Rahman, and Baikaki should all have had 2nd yellow cards. Hopefully in Bangkok, the ref will get tough with these yard dogs.
Singapore did improve in the second half, but mainly because the Thais were happy to defend deep, and then counter attack. I don't remember Kosin/Sinthaveechai making a single save. Going on the number of clear chances, a 4 or 5 goal margin of victory would not have flattered Thailand at all.
Congratulations must go to Singapore's John Wilkinson, who has taken over from Andorra's Oscar Sonejee, as 'The WORST International footballer I've ever seen'.

kosin should also have got red for his antics at the pen and the way some of the thais went down was a joke
if singapore had been given a pen when still 1-0 ...
raddy said the players didn t folow instructions but with that early thai onslaught it was damage control. the key was not to concede but they did and once nas got booked they were down to 10 men effectively

I don't know what Kosin was playing at. He seemed pretty desperate to get booked. I believe he's suspended for Wednesday...Did if he fancy a few days rest?
If Kittisak is in goal, it might give Singapore a chance (if they can manage a shot on target). From what i've seen of him, he looks a bit ropey.
I think the stretcher count was about 6-0 to Thailand. You can guarantee it'll be the same if Singapore are winning in Bangkok! I thought Steve Darby was trying to put a stop to it? Easier said then done!
It'll be intesresting to see the tactics on Weds. I'm sure it'll be more of the same from Thailand, hopefully they can take the early chances this time.
If Singapore come and 'park the bus' then they'll just invite pressure on themselves. If they are too attacking the Thais will pick them off at will on the counter.
Should be a good game.
I'm predicting another 3-1 win for Thailand.

singapore will have to go for it and away from their whiney fans might even put in a better performance
steve darby was fuming about kosin s antics after the game and when i asked whether he would call up kawin he said he really wan t worried, feeling they had plenty of goalie cover
