A look at the Malaysia Cup
It's the oldest football competition in the region by far and much older than some Johnny come latelys like the Champions League and the World Cup. Yet it gets scant coverage inside and out of Malaysia despite the final being an occassion to savour with attendances well in excess of 50,000.
We're currently at the group stage. There are five groups each with four teams who play each other home and away with just a couple of games left
Group A sees KL Plus just a point clear of Perlis while Pahang and Melaka are there just to provide shooting practise to the big boys. One time Sriwijaya target Nizaruddin Yusof has four goals so far. This weekend sees KL PLus travel down to Melaka who have just one point so far while east coast side have double that and they entertain Perlis.
In Group B Negeri Sembilan, which translates as 9 states, have a 100% record scoring 12 goals and conceding just one. They go to Kuching to take on hapless Sarawak who have no money, no points and just one goal meaning their top scorer is Hadera Bakeri. They have also conceded 20 times in their four games! Terengganu are second and they travel all the way down the east coast to take on newly promoted Johor at the Larkin Stadium.
Perak and Johor FC lead Group C with 9 points while My Team and Kuala Lumpur are just there to make up the numbers with just three goals scored between them. My Team host Johor FC while KL take on Perak in Cheras, KL.
Selangor also have an unbeaten record so far in Group D and are on course for a treble. Add the Charity Shield and it's a quartet. Throw in the Selangor Cup and it's a quintet. Kuala Muda are second while PDRM and Sabah are allowed to take points off each other. Selangor, for whom Safee Sali has scored four goals, will be looking to keep the PDRM keeper busy while Kuala Muda, assured of second place, make the long trip to Sabah.
Low scoring Group E is led by Kelantan who have a 100% record despite losing coach Peter Butler on the eve of the competition. This weekend they take on holders Kedah while Penang, who share second with Kedah, host ATM.
Don't know who qualifies. I'm assuming the five group winners and the three best runners up but I don't know.
