Chonburi punished for fan violence

TOR CHITTINAND

Chonburi FC have been ordered to play their final home game of the season at a neutral ground after crowd trouble in the Thai Premier League this week.

Second-placed Chonburi drew 2-2 with relegation strugglers Chula United at Sirindhorn stadium on Wednesday.

Their fans were furious that referee Chaovalit Sananwai disallowed a goal for off-side, a move that dented Chonburi's chance of winning the title.

The supporters asked Siam Sport TV crew to show them a replay of that incident. They refused to heed their demand and were attacked by some angry fans.

Football Association of Thailand bosses and representatives of all 16 TPL clubs met to consider the matter yesterday.

They decided that Chonburi must play their final home game against Thai Port on Oct 18 at Supachalasai stadium, FAT president Worawi Makudi said.

Chonburi must punish the fans who caused trouble on Wednesday. The club will face further punishment if they fail to control their supporters, he said.

At the same time, Chaovalit has been banned from officiating for the rest of the season because he made several mistakes in Wednesday's game, Worawi said.

In the final two games of the season, Chonburi travel to Navy Rayong on Sunday and face Thai Port on Oct 18. The Sharks are three points behind league leaders Muang Thong United.
