Azraai quits Kedah

ALOR SETAR

Kedah head coach Mohd Azraai Khor Abdullah on Thursday announced his resignation from the team, effective immediately.

He said he submitted his resignation letter to State Youth and Sports, Arts and Heritage Culture Committee chairman Dr Hamdan Mohamed Khalib this morning.

"I feel responsible for the failure of the Kedah football team to make it to the quarter-finals (of the Malaysia Cup) and resigning from the team is the best thing for me to do," he told Bernama at his home here.

He said he was no longer interested to be in the team because he was so fed up with the Kedah Football Association's (KFA) attitude, which he described as hardly cooperative in certain issues, especially in acquiring new players.

"In fact, before the Malaysia Cup campaign began, I had managed to get the T-Team's player, Haris Safwan, to play for us and strengthen our defence, but the KFA was not serious in taking the player and this really disappointed me," he said.

Azraai said he had wanted to work and give the best to the team but the KFA kept politicising football and refused to take players from other states.

"I don't regret the decision (to resign) because throughout my coaching career, I have given my best and I hope my successor will do better and take the Kedah football team back to the throne," said the man who had coached the team since 2004.

Under his guidance, the Kedah team had achieved their best performance by winning three titles, namely the Malaysia Cup, FA Cup and Super League, in 2007 and 2008.

Meanwhile, Dr Hamdan, when contacted, declined comment.
