The sound of silence
After a few weeks when it seemed hardly a day went by without an Indonesian team being linked with players from Singapore or Thailand now all seems quiet.
Sriwijaya, seemingly linked with every player in south east Asia, are now considering a 35 year old Liberian striker named Maker. A far cry from the likes of Noh Alam Shah, Teerasil Dangda, Agu Casmir and Theerathep Winothai who had previously been linked with the Palembang side.
Today Persija were linked with Geylang United defender Baihakki Khaizan while Sriwijaya do still get linked with Woodlands Wellington defender Precious Emuejeraye once in a while.
Sriwijaya do have space for a couple of Asian players while Persija, now that Benny Dollo is in place, will start sniffing round in earnest. But Persib, having just snapped up Rene Martinez from relegated Deltras, have mumbled something about not needing any more foreigners.
Although in my own humble opinion both Persib and Persija could do with new keepers, much like Arsenal.
Newly promoted Persebaya are giving trials this week to a couple of Iranian players while Fandi Ahmad, coach of Pelita Jaya, is spending this week in Japan and South Korea checking on potential recruits. Not sure why he went so far when all he had to do was go back to Singapore for a few days and have a look at Balestier Khalsa striker Oh Ddog Yi. He seems to have the balls and aggression to survive here.
Of course there is one reason perhaps why no Singaporeans have yet made the move here. Money. One player I spoke to a couple of weeks ago was dead excited about playing in Indonesia but didn't fancy the idea of going a few months without getting paid.
