Is Robbo the man?

Now we hear that the Thai FA are keen to replace outgoing coach Peter Reid with his former England team mate Bryan Robson. Of course, that makes sense. Cos after all Robbo is famous isn't he? He would make a perfect figure head for the national team in Thailand even if he didn't actually take in many games. Sod that, but he would make the sponsors happy.

Can you be a part time coach and fly in once in a while? Is that an effecient way of managing anything at all? We could argue that with You Tube and Skype we could do away with the personal touch thing but then isn't that what makes managers great? The little things they do, the personal man management that happens on the training field or on the team bus?

If Robbo were to be given the job how much of a commitment would he be willing to make to Thailand? Would he be prepared to upsticks and get a condo on Sukhumvit for the duration of his contract? Would he be willing to wade through centimetres of rainwater to take in Samut Songkram against Sri Racha 'cos rumour has it the visiting striker is a bit special?

'Cos if he's not then the FA need to have a serious think about whether he is the man for the job. By all means have someone like him as a roving ambassador, pressing the flesh and smiling for inane photos with the suits. But on the training field have someone who is commited to the cause.

Steve Darby would be ideal for the job of course. He is committed to the region having lived here donkey's years he won't be heading home for cousin Joan's 11th birthday at the drop of a hat.

The problem I guess with Darby is he ain't sexy enough. Robson and Reid are sexy 'cos they're famous. Darby is familiar to football folk throughout the region but them corporates will sniff and say 'who are ya?'

But one day the Thais will have to think what it is they really want. Do they want the famous name so they can crow 'look at us' until he gets a better job or do they want serious stability?

Actually, we always know what we want; someone that can sort this mess in our FA and build the solid ground for long term development. We shout, we scream but the almighty Worawi doesn't seem to care (I doubt he will hear it at all).

The news of Bryan Robson for our national coaching have brought more skeptical and frustration than approval. We definitely want a professional coach to do real job and it's not a secret here in Thailand that Peter Reid doesn't do anything much. Many have predicted that Reid would not stayed with us for long and it turn out true.

We don't want anybody to look at us just because we got a famous manager and I don't think there will be any decent football supporter will think in that way.

i agree that most fans think that way. but worawi is a politician and these people inhabit different universe from us

why does it have to be a faded englishman? why not an experienced thai?
