Gombak United v Woodlands Wellington 1-2
Substitute Jamil Ali really put the cat among the pigeons last night at Jurong West Stadium when his late winner put a bloody great dent into Gombak United's title credentials.
It wasn't a classic, far from it, but an eventful final few minutes saw an unconvincing Gombak brought down to earth by the verve of a Woodlands side who had been comprehensively overturned by their title rivals SAF earlier in the week.
Agu Casmir had given the home side the lead in the second half after the Rams had cheaply given the ball away in midfield. Running through the defence Casmir casually lifted the ball over Rezal Hasan to make it 1-0 and seemingly set the Bulls on their way.
Casmir had a second goal disallowed after interfering with Hasan which sparked a mini brawl and former PSMS man Luis Eduardo Hicks saw red in another incident that saw Woodlands down to 10 men. Surely Gombak were set fair.
Perhaps not. Just as I was thinking who would score for the Rams Zakaria Yousif taps it home to make it 1-1. then with just a couple of minutes on the clock Gombak fail to clear a corner, Hammond beats the offside trap and his low cross across the face of the goal was turned home by Jamil Ali from close range.
The passionate travelling band of Woodlands fans went potty and watching SAF coach Richard Bok headed for home with a big grin on his face. Tuesday night sees first against second, SAF against Gombak and advantage most certainly lies with the Warriors after this upset.
