United spurn their own sponsor

On Manchester United's forthcoming tour of Asia they will be travelling by private jet; a kick in the teeth for Air Asia, one of the club's sponsors.

Heaven forbid the sons of heaven, well Old Trafford, should dirty themselves by flying on normal planes with us mortals and, good god, even mixing with regular fans.

Many years back I was on the same plane as players from Arsenal, Nottingham Forest and Manchester City but never bothered speaking with them. Of course the game lacked the hype that it has today and perhaps Gus Caeser never quite approached Ronaldo in the celebrity stakes but for me it's just another example of the game slipping away from the normal fan.

That's what makes the game in this region appear that much more 'real'. Seeing the SLeague's top scorer queuing up at the bus stop, watching an injured Aleksander Duric pose for photos with his family outside the National Stadium, having Pelita Jaya walk to the stadium because the access was too crowded for their bus, meeting Persija coach Danurwindo for a pizza, watching Elie Aiboy greet well wishers at Bung Karno Stadium...
