SAF Grab 3 More Points
At this stage of the season all that mattered to SAF coach Richard Bok last night was three points to keep in the title race. The performance was secondary.
At times during the first half victory seemed far away as SAF’s passing often went astray. After a long trek to Beirut last week the Warriors’ looked jaded and out of it. Duric had a tap in disallowed while, for the Rams, Park threatened continuously down the right.
It took the home fans 35 minutes to wake up and with the first noise from the terraces SAF took the lead, Duric taking advantage of some rare space in the penalty area and making it 1-0.
Talk to any coach and they stress the importance of concentration after scoring. The home team’s defence had looked shaky all night and another mix up, this time between goalie and defender, saw a Woodlands player felled by the keeper. The protests were pointless and I wonder why the keeper didn’t receive red.
Park scored from the spot and we went into half time all level.
Second half saw a goal plucked straight from the pages of Shoot magazine circa 1974. a cross from the right and Therdsak Chaiman scored with a diving header they type of which we don’t see any more.
SAF hung on for the points but if Woodlands had some extra quality or pace up top SAF could have been pegged back. Time and time again Woodlands found themselves in good positions but the final ball was poor.
SAF are just two points behind leaders Super Reds with five games remaining. Tonight sees Home United play Geylang United at Jalan Besar for their game in hand. Defeat would leave the Protectors six points off the pace.
