A Mini Asian Cup??
I was flicking through the SLeague website recently and noticed the preliminary round of the Singapore Cup is kicking off about now.
I already knew their domestic league features a couple of foreign based clubs but now their Cup does too. There was talk the Indonesian Under 23's would enter the league but it ended as just that. Talk. Instead they spent weeks in The Netherlands and now can't score to save their lives.
Bangkok University are also competing in the Asian Champions League having won last seasons Thai Championship.
Chonburi appeared in last years tournament and made it through to the final before losing to Tampines at the death. Indonesia and Persib Bandung fans may recognise their keeper, Kosin Hathairattanakool.
DPMM FC come from Brunei and briefly toured Indonesia prior to this season kicking off. They play in the Malaysian Super League where they lie 3rd.
Phnom Penh Empire make up the quartet and of course they come from Belize!
They join 2 other forign clubs, Korean Super Reds and Lionang and 12 Singapore clubs.
29 Apr 2007, Sun Albirex Niigata (S) v Bangkok University Jurong East
30 Apr 2007, Mon Gombak United v Young Lions Jurong West
1 May 2007, Tue Sengkang Punggol v Phnom Penh Empire Hougang
2 May 2007, Wed Balestier Khalsa v Chonburi Toa Payoh
3 May 2007, Thu Geylang United v Singapore Armed Forces Bedok
4 May 2007, Fri Liaoning Guangyuan v Woodlands Wellington Queenstown
6 May 2007, Sun Home United v Korean Super Reds Bishan
31 May 2007, Thu Tampines Rovers v DPMM Tampines

This is what we need to lift the quality and profile of our game in our part of the world.
Something similar happens in basketball, a Singaporean based team plays in the Australian league.

I'm still mulling over this. Obviously it could benefit Phnom Penh to play better quality opposition
I just wonder how S'pore fans would feel if the final was between say PP and BKK University??!!
I hope to get to Singapore in a couple of months so will do an unscientific survey!
